A multisport fieldhouse would benefit users involved in a multitude of sports — both competitive and recreational — and have a positive impact on the health of our citizens. It would also provide a needed boost to the city's economy.
For example, a venue capable of hosting provincial, national and international competitions in a wide variety of sports would bring in, by conservative estimate, an annual tourist income to the City of about $9 million.
Millions more could be realized by hosting trade shows and conventions in the facility.SO WHAT'S THE PLAN?
The first step is a feasibility study of the project.
Funds raised by the Society and matched by the Province's Community Initiatives Program allowed us to begin work on the study in late 2009. The first phase has been completed and the second phase is under way.
Phase two of the study will include an overview of the market and the potential user base for the fieldhouse.
The final phases will look at projected revenues and expenses for the facility.
The City is looking at a redevelopment master plan for both Foothills and Glenmore athletic parks and under that master plan, a multisport fieldhouse enclosing a 400m indoor track has been proposed for Foothills. (Click here to see the plans for both Foothills and Glenmore Athletic Parks.) These conceptual plans now have to go before City Council for approval.
